Vernon Jubilee Hospital is the North Okanagan's main hospital, run by Interior Health at 2101 32nd Street, right in the middle of Vernon. It's busy, and it's growing. As of September 2025, Interior Health had created 44 new nursing positions at VJH under B.C.'s minimum nurse-to-patient ratios, in general medicine, general surgery and pediatrics, and was still hiring to fill them. If you're one of the people filling them, this guide covers what a real estate agent who lives here would tell you over coffee: where to live for shift work, whether to rent or buy first, and what to ask your recruiter. It's an independent guide, not affiliated with Interior Health or Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
About the hospital
Interior Health lists 24-hour emergency care, an ICU and cardiac stepdown unit, maternity, general and orthopaedic surgery, surgical daycare, psychiatry, pediatrics and full imaging (CT, MRI, ultrasound) at VJH. The campus includes the Polson Tower. As of September 2025, three nurse practitioners worked alongside the hospitalists, and Interior Health lists a VJH CT scanner among its 2025 equipment projects.
Staff and visitor parking are both on site. Interior Health's parking map shows dedicated staff lots and shared lots; ask your manager how staff permits work on your unit, since the rates posted online are several years old.
Where to live for shift work
The hospital sits in the centre of town, so almost all of Vernon is a short drive. The bigger question for shift workers is the road between your bed and your unit at 6:15 on a January morning.
Closest to VJH
East Hill and central Vernon are right beside the hospital. Many homes are close enough to walk or bike in good weather, and you'll never worry about a hill after a night shift. Expect older character homes, suites and smaller lots.
A short drive, more space
Mission Hill, Harwood, BX, Middleton Mountain, Bella Vista and the Foothills trade a few more minutes in the car for newer homes, bigger yards and views. Several of these neighbourhoods are on steep hills, so test the drive after a snowfall before you buy.
Lake life
Okanagan Landing and Coldstream put you minutes from Okanagan or Kalamalka Lake after a shift. The drive is longer than from East Hill, but the trade-off is a swim after your shift.
Small town and acreage
Lavington, Lumby and Armstrong give you acreage and quieter streets, in return for a real commute on the highway. Think hard about winter night shifts before committing.
Every neighbourhood is compared on the neighbourhoods page, with recent sold prices.
Before you buy, drive from the house to the hospital at the time your shift actually starts, ideally after a snowfall. A home that's ten minutes away in July can feel very different at 6:15 a.m. in January. Winter tires are required on many B.C. highways from October 1 to April 30, and you'll want them in town too.
Rent first or buy right away?
Many new hospital staff rent for their first few months. It lets you learn the neighbourhoods, finish probation and see which shifts you land before committing. Rentals are easier to find than they were: CMHC's October 2025 survey put Vernon's apartment vacancy rate at 3.2%, up from 1.0% a year earlier, with average rents of $1,244 for a one-bedroom and $1,619 for a two-bedroom.
If you'd rather buy, here's what homes cost in the North Okanagan in August 2026, according to the Association of Interior REALTORS®:
| Home type | Benchmark price |
|---|---|
| Single-family / detached | $794,300 |
| Townhouse | $545,900 |
| Condo / apartment | $302,400 |
One rule catches many newcomers: B.C.'s first-time home buyer exemption from property transfer tax requires that you've lived in B.C. for a year before the purchase registers, or filed two B.C. tax returns in the last six years. If you're moving from another province, you likely won't qualify on day one. The buying in B.C. guide covers this and the other B.C. rules.
Ask your recruiter about incentives
Interior Health publishes several recruitment incentives. Whether you qualify depends on your role, your union agreement and where you're moving from, so confirm the details with your hiring manager or recruiter before you sign a lease or a purchase contract:
- Relocation allowance for permanent and temporary placements. The amount depends on how far you're moving and comes with a two-year return of service. Casual positions aren't eligible.
- Difficult-to-Fill Vacancies incentive: up to $15,000 for select hard-to-fill positions in urban communities, with a two-year return of service.
- Student loan forgiveness through B.C. and federal programs, for eligible health professions working in underserved communities. Ask whether your position qualifies.
Two of Interior Health's guides are worth reading before the move: its moving-to-B.C. FAQ for nurses and its FAQ for allied health. Physician postings are at physicianjobs.interiorhealth.ca, and all other jobs at jobs.interiorhealth.ca.
Before your first shift
- Registration: nurses register with the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and physicians with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. (CPSBC). Your recruiter will tell you what's needed before your start date.
- Health coverage: B.C.'s Medical Services Plan has a waiting period for new residents, so keep your old coverage or private insurance in place until MSP starts. The moving checklist explains the timing.
- A family doctor: even health care workers need one. Sign up with B.C.'s Health Connect Registry as soon as you have a Vernon address.
Moving with a family
- Schools: the Vernon School District (SD22) runs 19 schools, 14 elementary and 5 secondary, for about 9,400 students, plus online and alternate programs. French immersion is offered. Your catchment school depends on your address, so check the district's school locator at sd22.bc.ca before you choose a home.
- Child care: start looking early, especially if you work shifts. Your local Child Care Resource and Referral centre can help you find spaces.
- Getting set up in B.C.: the moving checklist covers your driver's licence, vehicle insurance and the rest.
Common questions
Where is Vernon Jubilee Hospital?
Vernon Jubilee Hospital is at 2101 32nd Street in central Vernon, B.C. It's run by Interior Health and is the main hospital for the North Okanagan.
Which Vernon neighbourhoods are closest to Vernon Jubilee Hospital?
East Hill and central Vernon are right beside the hospital, and many homes there are close enough to walk or bike. Mission Hill, Harwood, BX, Middleton Mountain, Bella Vista and the Foothills are a short drive. Okanagan Landing and Coldstream are a little farther but close to the lakes.
Does Interior Health help with moving costs?
Interior Health offers a relocation allowance for permanent and temporary placements, based on how far you're moving, with a two-year return of service. It also publishes other recruitment incentives, such as up to $15,000 for select difficult-to-fill vacancies in urban communities. Confirm what applies to your position with your recruiter.
Should I rent or buy when I start at VJH?
Many new staff rent for a few months first to learn the neighbourhoods and settle into their shifts. Vernon's apartment vacancy rate was 3.2% in CMHC's October 2025 survey, so rentals are easier to find than in recent years. If you're moving from another province, note that B.C.'s first-time buyer property transfer tax exemption generally requires a year of B.C. residence.
